We’ve had a quiet week at Vogue, but now that it’s the first Thursday in May, we can look back on the Met that was… because surely you haven’t seen a thing about it! The days leading up to the Met were busy, between our pre-Met fete and Vogue Cafe. So off we go, from the Mixed-Up Files of Ms. Malle!

Pulling off every facet of the Met Gala—from planning the seating chart, to booking the surprise performer (or two), to firing off all our coverage from the Met’s ground floor—is an astounding and herculean effort, and also a thrilling thing to behold! We published 125 stories over two days and over 100,000 of you voted for your best dressed guest of the night—the results of which will be revealed soon. Special thanks to Goop Kitchen, Fabrique, and Flutter Butter Bakery for keeping all of us fueled over two hectic days!
I love Sir Frederic Leighton’s Pre-Raphaelite painting Flaming June; it has one of my favorite pieces of clothing in art. I am such a fan of Colleen Allen’s designs and the rich color palette she uses, especially in her most recent collection, so I was really excited to work with her on a Flaming June-inspired dress using all-natural dyes made from saffron buds and foraged mushrooms. Manolo Blahnik also made me a pair of Carolyne slingbacks in the same mango hue (not dyed with mushrooms), and Fred Leighton (another—though unintentional homage—to the painting!) loaned me the most spectacular 19th-century diamond daisy necklace.
My mother turns 80 on Saturday, we’re having a party for her on Friday, and Sunday is Mother’s Day—so we will really be celebrating her all weekend long! We also had her visit the Vogue podcast studio for a special Mother’s Day episode of The Run-Through. Tune in to hear us talk (and bicker) about Jane Goodall, Liza Minnelli, Bert Stern, Meryl Streep, Harrison Ford, JFK Jr., and many more.

The Condé M. Nast Galleries
This spring’s Costume Institute exhibition, “Costume Art,” is so special and so rich in terms of the material Andrew Bolton has woven together—but in the new Condé M. Nast Galleries, the show feels seamless and inviting. My favorite juxtapositions were in the anatomical body section, where sketches by Eugène Delacroix are paired with the most amazing pieces by Christopher Kane and Madame Grès.

Madame Tussauds
On Friday night we had our annual pre-Met party, which I like to think of as the Met’s louche younger cousin. We hosted it at Madame Tussauds, where we were able to move the wax figures around so that Annie Leibovitz was there to greet people at the elevator. (Many posed for her, thinking she was real.) When I lifted my arm for a picture with Annie and the zipper of my corseted McQueen dress split, a lovely member of the wardrobe team there, Taylor, whisked me into the secret work-in-progress room and sewed me back into it. (She noted, in doing so, that she is not accustomed to working on live people!)

Vogue Café
Over the weekend, we took over Altro Paradiso in SoHo for a Vogue Café pop-up with Chase Sapphire Reserve®. There, we hosted everything from a live recording of The Run-Through with Tory Burch to a station for having your Alex Mill tote hand-painted, with a steady supply of baked goods from Hani’s Bakery throughout and a flower cart outside.

Pajama Party
After the Met, people traipsed to a baker’s dozen after-parties—and our intrepid reporter Eileen Kelly tried to go to all of them. Hopefully those who got home as the sun was rising spent the rest of the day in pajamas and hotel slippers… or took a cue from our May fashion story and opted for a pair of Bode bunny ones.

Met Prep
I was in the office early Tuesday morning, so there was no PJ party for me… but my pre-Met weekend prep consisted of a facial with Raquel Medina-Cleghorn, a lymphatic drainage massage focused on releasing my clenched masseters—life-changing!—and a trip to the Film Forum to see the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with Arthur Albert.

Dressed-Up Denim
There has been much discussion this week about whether it’s disrespectful to wear denim to the Met or not. People were upset about model Bhavitha Mandava’s Chanel jeans, which upset me because Bhavitha was so proud of her outfit. We chatted before dinner at the museum and she showed off the couture organza fabric of her pants. (“It’s a couture version of my subway show look!”) Christian Allaire unpacked the denim drama and confirmed that, if approached appropriately, it really is okay to dress up your blue jeans.
