A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Vogue’s Summer Issue Cover Story

Over my nine years at Vogue, I’ve captured plenty of BTS on cover story sets, and all of them have their quirks. I don’t want to play favorites, but being at the unopened—still under construction!—Lucas Museum of Narrative Art for Gracie Abrams’s first Vogue cover shoot in March was a dream.
We had an amazing, female-led team, between photographer Larissa Hoffman (who was doing her first Vogue US cover, too!) and fashion editor Jordan Bickham; the space was enormous and totally otherworldly; and Gracie was such a joy to be around. In the BTS you can see her singing (we had Lady Gaga and Tame Impala on the playlist as Larissa was shooting) and as an LA native, she was the most thoughtful host, surprising us all with Mariscos Jalisco’s famous shrimp tacos.
Sure, Los Angeles was in the middle of a heatwave, and yes, some of the clothes got stuck at LAX (meaning Jordan’s team had to hop into a car at a moment's notice to retrieve them), but who doesn’t love a plot twist?! I think the joyfulness of the environment and the team behind the shoot comes across in every photograph.
