It is finally spring in New York, and all kinds of thrilling things are going on. I bared my toes for the first time in months and bought potted hyacinths at the farmers' market; at the office, we are reading The Devil Wears Prada as our next Vogue Book Club pick; and I've fallen in love with the sumptuous waves sported by the Madonnas in the Raphael show at the Met. |

For the April issue, our talent team—mainly Vogue's entertainment editor, Keaton Bell—worked with Carlos Nazario and Tyler Mitchell on a portfolio of all the young performers we're most excited about right now. These included cemented stars like Chase Infiniti and Connor Storrie, as well as a few people on the brink of major breakouts, like Audrey Hobert. |

Three events worth the wait |
"Raphael: Sublime Poetry" at the Met I was meant to get two of my three cavities filled this morning, but when my godmother invited my mother and me on a tour of the much-anticipated Raphael exhibit at the Met, there was no question I was going to bump my appointment. The show is spectacular and I learned a lot, including that Raphael sort of invented maternal cuddling in art. (His depictions of the Madonna and child introduced a new intimacy to that iconography.) I also loved the portrait of Baldassare Castiglione, the author of The Book of the Courtier and coiner of the term sprezzatura, which I feel was the original quiet luxury.
To capture all the spring art shows opening, Alex Hildreth did a great piece on which pieces from the fall shows could be paired with which exhibits. (That Prada show was the embodiment of sprezzatura if ever there was one!) |
Vogue Vintage Market We had the best time at the Vogue Vintage Market (with thanks to eBay). The weekend kicked off with a cocktail celebrating our April issue and its amazing cover star, Doja Cat, who did some early shopping, snapping up a Khaite belt with interlocking gold hands for the buckle.
At our market, the original owner of the item is often listed on the tag, so someone like Fabiola Beracasa Beckman—always a generous donor—has had people reach out on Instagram to tell her they bought her vintage Prada! Others preferred to remain anonymous…though we had a good idea of the person behind a raft of Chanel jackets. Indeed, Jordan Roth walked out of the Friday cocktail looking fabulous in one of Anna's bouclé coats!
Saturday was the best kind of mayhem. There was a line down the block when I arrived two hours before opening, including people in tents who had been there since the wee hours. Sadly, someone else snagged the Tom Ford-era Gucci red velvet suit I wanted and the Manolo croc pumps were too small… but there's always next year! |
Cheese, Please! Across town was another sale with another line around the block! I see your Row sample sale and raise you the C. Hesse Cheese warehouse sale in East Williamsburg. I did not attend this august event myself, but based on Anna Grace Lee's reporting and Anh Nguyen's photos of colorful wheels of Alp Blossom and crates filled with gouda, I clearly need to be first in line next time. |
The Devil Wears Prada What's more groundbreaking than florals for spring? Choosing The Devil Wears Prada as our next book club pick! In an edit meeting, we realized that most of us at Vogue had never actually read the original novel, and it's proven a fascinating anthropological study. (Among other things that shocked me, everyone smokes indoors and coffee is $1!) We will be rolling out exclusive Devil Wears Prada stories tied both to the book and to the movies throughout the month, including today's deeply reported piece by Emma Specter on what Vogue staffers actually wore to their interviews with Anna Wintour. Be sure to join the conversation in our weekly group chats on the Vogue app! |
Easter Sweets One of my favorite New York institutions is Myzel's Chocolates, the shoebox-sized chocolatier on West 55th Street. Obviously I had to make a pre-Easter pilgrimage, and got a variety of blue robin's eggs with marshmallow filling and classic pastel malt eggs. In a similar spirit, Hugo Yu photographed some of our favorite nostalgic Easter sweets, including my childhood favorite: sugar egg dioramas.
Elsewhere on the site, for those a little less enthused by eggs, we ran a story listing 19 foods that have even more protein. Something for everyone! |
Match Your Sandals to Your Pedicure? It was a coincidence that my burgundy nails matched my merlot Aeyde slides, but I liked the look and may think about that the next time I pick my nail color. For example, a fire-engine red could be good with a pair of strappy Khaite sandals. |
