We are T-minus five days away from…Cinco de Mayo, and even fewer from the Met Gala! Wish us luck; we’re buckling up for some late nights and early mornings. This week we also hosted our second Book Club event, gathering 24 former Anna assistants from the past 30 years; we got the real Emily to officially reveal herself for the first time; and we even had Lauren Weisberger write in from the boat she now lives on. The Devil Wears Prada 2 comes out this weekend and I am…deviled out!

We hosted our second Vogue Book Club event on Monday evening at the Metrograph: a special screening of The Devil Wears Prada 2 followed by a conversation about the book, and what it was like working at Vogue in the early aughts, with writer Billy Norwich and stylist Kate Young. Most exciting of all was that we invited every one of Anna Wintour’s former assistants from the past few decades that we could find—and more than 20 of them attended! Will the real Emily please stand up?
In fact, she did. One of them was stylist Leslie Fremar, who came on the podcast to finally reveal, after almost 25 years, that she is unquestionably the real Emily from The Devil Wears Prada. When she was in her early 20s and working in Anna’s office, she hired Lauren Weisberger and sat across from her for the eight months that Lauren worked at Vogue. There’s been so much industry speculation about this for so long, it was sort of a relief to hear Leslie owning it and sharing everything from the book that she actually remembers happening.
Lauren herself was also invited to the screening, but did not attend. She did, however, write an exclusive essay for Vogue from the trawler that she and her family now live on to reflect on how a book she wrote when she was just out of college became a worldwide cultural phenomenon.

From Margaux’s backyard to Biarritz
|
Fowl Play
It feels like all the chicest New Yorkers are bird-watching this season, from Arthur Albert (at his Central Park Explorers club) to Margaux Anbouba, who documented her new favorite hobby—and the season’s best avian-inspired fashion—via her birdcam this week.
Artie and I have also been enjoying outdoor dining again—’tis the season!—and doing some pigeon- and sparrow-spotting (which I don’t have the heart to tell him isn’t as rare as he seems to think it is).

Biarritz Blastoff
Some of our friends and colleagues bopped over to Biarritz this week for the Chanel cruise show, which kicks off a month of resort collections shown all over the globe (though conveniently many are in the US this season). For anyone wondering what a resort show actually is, here is a helpful primer, plus a debate about the Chanel collection’s freaky footwear and a guide to France’s chicest surf town.

The First Weekend in May
Those in town this weekend—for the Met or otherwise!—should come visit us at the Vogue Café (presented by Chase Sapphire Reserve®), popping up in SoHo at Altro Paradiso. We have cerulean blue matchas and pastries from Hani’s bakery; a Don’t Let Disco beading bar and a paint-your-Alex Mill-tote station; and even a figure-drawing class hosted by Happy Medium. We’ll also be recording a live episode of The Run-Through with Tory Burch, who hosted her second annual Founders Breakfast, honoring Anna Wintour, this week with a Mr. McGregor’s Garden worth of lettuce ware.

Body Language
On Monday we published an amazing collection of essays on the female body’s different forms, timed to this year’s Costume Institute exhibition. Some stellar authors explored aging and size and nudity, their stories paired with photographs by the likes of Ryan McGinley and Irving Penn.
We also took a deep dive into how GLP-1s have fundamentally shifted the culture and the realities of the modeling industry with a reported piece by Rory Satran.

Power Prep
Speaking of bodies! I was delighted to see Margaux’s interview with City Council member Chi Ossé about being a competitive power lifter on the weekends. Chi is everyone at Vogue’s new gym-spiration! I’ve been trying to do more strength training since reading our story on how it’s a must for women over 40 (ahem). I lift at my boxing gym, Punch Force Fitness, and also during EMS training at the ALO headquarters, which I’ve been trying to do more consistently as pre-Met prep.

Shake Your Bon Bon
When I learned in March that I had three cavities, my dentist asked about my daily sugar intake...and was less than impressed with the sour gummy worms I eat all day. So in April I decided to cut out sugar entirely except for one day a week, which usually involved a child’s birthday cake. (As my husband helpfully notes, however, I did not count the oat milk I dump in my coffee or the glass of Sancerre that was definitely happening more than once a week.) I feel good! Normally I find conversations about moderation so tedious, but when I used my one sugar day to eat an entire bag of Percy Pig gummies that my colleague Florence brought me from the UK, I really did wish I’d stopped at three!
