Each Monday in April, Vogue editors will take you inside what’s shaping this year’s conversation—spotlighting standout looks, revisiting memorable moments from the archive, and sharing the perspectives that make the Met Gala fashion’s most anticipated night.
Every year, my role at the Met Gala seems to shift—though the pace never does. In my earliest days at Vogue, before I was editing stories myself, I was on the ground in the thick of it, dispatched to do just about anything: standing as a kind of stoic marker guiding guests toward the party, tracking down a missing publicist, even acting as an escort for co-chair Naomi Osaka during her 2021 turn—making sure she was exactly where she needed to be, exactly when she needed to be there. These days, I’m in the writers room where a group of us huddle around screens, watching the livestream in real time, calling things out as they happen. Is Rihanna about to break the internet? Did Kim Kardashian really go there? How many transformations has Lady Gaga managed before even hitting the top of the steps? It’s part fashion theater, part live newsroom, and entirely electric.
For all the immediacy of the night, though, I’m just as drawn to what came before. The Met Gala has always been a spectacle—but it’s also a living archive, one that rewards those who know its history. The real thrill? When someone arrives not just dressed for the theme, but in conversation with a moment—runway, cultural, or even Met-specific—that came before. Those are the looks that linger. Consider the stories below your essential pre-reading.
Look out for next Monday’s newsletter, where another one of our editors will share their favorite Met Gala moments.
