A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Vogue’s September Issue Cover Story

By the time they’ve landed a Vogue cover, most interview subjects are canny, maybe a bit jaded, certainly wise enough to know what to share, what to hide, and how to seem like they’re sharing even while they’re hiding.
Homer Gere is that rarest of Vogue cover models—one who had never been interviewed anywhere before! He has enormous natural charisma that belied what he acknowledged were nerves; and he told me a couple months later, by text, that the T-shirt and shorts that made him look as if he hadn’t given his outfit a moment’s thought were in fact the result of four wardrobe changes before he left the house.
Kaia Gerber is the opposite of a clean slate; this was her fifth Vogue cover and probably her thousandth interview. And so I appreciated the animation with which she talked about everything from the potential benefits of psychedelic therapy for queer people, in particular, to the demoralizing rightward shift in the politics of her hometown of Malibu.
Writing about Homer and Kaia together presented a fun opportunity to weigh their differences against their obvious shared gifts—extreme privilege, great looks, and famous parentage the most salient among them. But while Kaia loves to talk about the importance of laughing at oneself, what has stayed with me about these two is how important it is to them both to be taken seriously and judged on their own merits. In this, they’re deeply unlike their characters in The Shards, whose focus is locked on the surface effects that shape the social hierarchy of high school.
They are both seekers, in their ways, Kaia through plant medicine and through literature, Homer through nature and Buddhist mindfulness practices. While she is working to deepen her acting onstage and in class, he is trying the family business on for size; if it doesn’t fit, he told me he’d consider medical school. Probably the greatest privilege Homer and Kaia share is the freedom to look for happiness and fulfillment wherever they wish.

Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere are Vogue’s September cover stars! They had the glow of two people running on very little sleep—but lots of adrenaline—when they joined The Run-Through for their first joint interview, just ahead of the premiere of The Shards.
